Vice President JD Vance issued a warning on Thursday regarding the United States' possible actions in response to Russia's handling of peace negotiations with Ukraine. Vance stated that if Russian leader Vladimir Putin fails to negotiate a peace deal with Ukraine in good faith, the US could utilize economic and military leverage as tools of influence. He mentioned that the option of deploying US troops to Ukraine is being considered, along with potential economic sanctions if a peace agreement does not secure Kyiv's long-term independence.
Vance's remarks diverge from recent statements made by the White House, including President Donald Trump's suggestion that Ukraine could become part of Russia in the future. Despite this, Trump later announced that peace talks would commence following a conversation with Putin. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also expressed a shift in US priorities, indicating that European and Ukrainian security would no longer be the primary focus for American forces.

Amidst these developments, Vance emphasized the importance of NATO as a crucial alliance for the US during his participation in the Munich Security Conference in Germany. He highlighted the need for NATO to adapt to future challenges, suggesting that burden-sharing among European members would allow the US to concentrate on issues in East Asia.
The uncertainty surrounding Europe escalated following Trump's statements, raising concerns that a potential agreement with Putin could sideline Ukraine's interests. European leaders rushed to reaffirm the necessity of Ukrainian involvement in any peace negotiations. French President Emmanuel Macron described the situation as an 'electroshock' for Europe, emphasizing the continent's responsibility to bolster its economy and defense capabilities while underscoring Ukraine's pivotal role in determining its own future.
