Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has strongly criticized the recent US decision to veto a Palestinian request for full United Nations membership, labeling it as a 'blatant aggression' against the Palestinian people and the desires of the international community.
Abbas accused the United States of violating international laws and failing to uphold its promises related to the two-state solution and peace in the region. He expressed disappointment in the current American administration for allowing Israel to undermine the Palestinian National Authority.
According to Abbas, the actions of the US government under President Joe Biden have fueled 'unprecedented anger' among Palestinians and in the region, potentially leading to increased instability and the proliferation of chaos and terrorism.
The US vetoed a resolution on Thursday that sought to support the Palestinian request for full UN membership. State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel emphasized that premature actions in New York, even with good intentions, would not lead to statehood for the Palestinian people.
The Palestinian quest for recognition as a full member state dates back to 2011. Currently, Palestine holds a non-member observer state status, which was granted in November 2012.
It is noteworthy that the US does not maintain an official diplomatic relationship with the Palestinian Authority at present.
