US Urges Syrian Rebels To Focus On Inclusive Governance

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called on the rebels who overthrew the Assad regime in Syria to prioritize inclusive governance as they move forward. Blinken emphasized that the United States has significant and enduring interests in Syria, including combating ISIS, preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and curbing the spread of terrorism and extremism.

Speaking at the US International Development Finance Corporation’s 5th Anniversary Conference, Blinken stressed the importance of supporting the Syrian people in rebuilding their nation and forging a new path. He underscored the US commitment to assisting the Syrian population in this critical phase.

Blinken mentioned that senior State Department officials are actively engaging with regional partners to address the Syrian crisis. However, he did not confirm whether the US is contemplating communication with the prominent Syrian rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which is designated as a terrorist organization by the US.

The Secretary of State highlighted the significance of actions over mere words, stating, “The real measure of their commitment is not just what they say, but what they do.”

Furthermore, Blinken reiterated the US government's ongoing efforts to gather information about American journalist Austin Tice, who was abducted by the Assad regime more than ten years ago. He expressed the determination to locate Tice and reunite him with his family and loved ones.

As the situation in Syria remains complex and challenging, Blinken emphasized the need for collective responsibility from the region and the international community to assist the Syrian people in shaping a better future for their nation.
