US sprinter Noah Lyles, who recently tested positive for Covid-19, will still be invited to the 200-meter medal ceremony, as confirmed by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC). Lyles, who secured a bronze medal in the 200m final following his earlier 100m gold win, disclosed that he began feeling unwell on Tuesday before receiving a positive Covid test result.
Kate Hartman of the USOPC stated that Lyles has been extended an invitation to attend the medal ceremony for the 200m event on Friday. Should he choose to participate, Lyles will adhere to safety protocols by wearing a mask. Hartman emphasized that Lyles is considerate of the comfort level of those presenting him with the medal.
International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach addressed the handling of Covid cases at the Games, noting that the virus is being managed similarly to other respiratory illnesses. Bach mentioned that Covid is being treated akin to the flu, with no specific requirements for additional measures or notifications.
In a reflective Instagram post, Lyles expressed his acceptance that his Olympic journey may have concluded prematurely due to the positive Covid test. Despite the unexpected turn of events, he conveyed gratitude for the experience and the support received, acknowledging the joy the Games brought him and spectators alike.
