Approximately 1,700 US service members, primarily from the National Guard with a small active-duty component, are set to assist with security measures at the Republican National Convention this week, according to Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh.
The personnel are mainly from the Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota National Guard. They will be providing various capabilities such as civil support, explosive ordnance disposal, and security services. Additionally, they are prepared to respond to any emergent domestic requirements to safeguard life, property, and maintain peace, order, and public safety.
Singh mentioned that the service members will be working in collaboration with the FBI, Secret Service, and Milwaukee Metro Police Department on a 24/7 basis. She clarified that their involvement was pre-planned and not a direct response to the recent attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump over the weekend.
As of Monday, there have been no requests for additional support from the National Guard, as confirmed by Singh.
