National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, while speaking in Tel Aviv following his meeting with Israeli leaders, reiterated the United States' continued commitment to supporting Israel in its fight against the terror group, Hamas. Sullivan was in the region to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Herzog, and several senior officials to discuss both current and future counter-terrorism military operations.
Sullivan indicated that his conversations focused on the 'ongoing war and military operations' and the shared objective of 'ensuring that Hamas will never again pose a threat to the state of Israel.' Emphasis was also placed on minimizing harm to civilians, increasing humanitarian assistance flow into Gaza, and securing the release of all remaining hostages.
The U.S. National Security Advisor also mentioned discussions with the United Nations, Egypt, and other regional partners to expedite the delivery of humanitarian aid. Detailing President Biden's commitment, Sullivan said, 'President Biden's commitment to restoring calm along the blue line through a combination of deterrence and diplomacy.'
Later on, Sullivan is slated to visit Ramallah to meet with Palestinian Authority’s President Abbas. The discussion agenda includes promoting stability in the West Bank, confronting terrorism, supporting the Palestinian Authority's security forces, and holding extremist settlers accountable for violence against Palestinians.
Sullivan reaffirmed President Biden’s commitment to a two-state solution that guarantees Israel's security and allows the Israeli people to live in peace and security with their neighbors.
Addressing a question about the impact of Israel's self-defense measures on human suffering in Gaza, Sullivan blamed Hamas for embedding itself among civilians, making it challenging for the Israeli Defense Force to separate terrorist targets from innocent people. Nonetheless, he emphasized the obligation of the IDF to take every precaution to protect civilians and minimize the loss of life.
Sullivan’s statements demonstrate a clear stance to support Israel's fight against terrorism while underscoring the importance of humanitarian aid, diplomacy, and future peace.
