The gravity of the situation has prompted the United States to stand firmly with Israel in order to prevent any recurrence of the October 7th attack. Blinken stressed that efforts are focused on bringing home the remaining hostages, addressing the humanitarian crisis, and protecting civilians in Gaza while working towards lasting peace and security in the region.
Blinken called attention to the submission against Israel to the International Court of Justice, dismissing the charge of genocide as meritless. He pointed out that those attacking Israel, namely Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Iran, openly advocate for Israel's annihilation and the mass murder of Jews. The Secretary of State underscored the importance of distinguishing between self-defense and aggression.
During his trip, Blinken met with leaders from Turkey, Greece, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, all of whom share concerns about the escalation of the conflict. These leaders have committed to leveraging their influence to prevent further spread of the conflict, specifically by deterring new borders from being opened.
The dire humanitarian situation in Gaza was a significant topic of discussion, given that 90 percent of the population faces acute food insecurity, according to the United Nations. Blinken stressed the need for increased aid, including food, water, medicine, and other essential goods, to reach the people of Gaza swiftly and effectively. Israel's cooperation in removing obstacles and improving de-confliction procedures for the safe and secure movement of aid is crucial.
Recognizing the indispensable role of the United Nations, Blinken highlighted the extraordinary courage demonstrated by UN personnel and other aid workers in Gaza in providing life-saving services under challenging conditions. He also informed that an assessment mission, facilitated by the UN, would determine the feasibility of allowing displaced Palestinians to return safely to their homes in the north of Gaza.
Additionally, Blinken expressed concern about ongoing tensions on Israel's northern border with Lebanon, where daily rocket attacks by Hezbollah persist. He conveyed the United States' commitment to working with Israel to find a diplomatic solution that ensures the security of both Israeli and Lebanese families.
Finally, Blinken discussed the need for a more durable peace and security for Israel within the region. He emphasized that a regional approach, inclusive of a pathway to a Palestinian state, is essential for achieving these goals.
