US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has emphasized the importance of a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, following a recent escalation of violence in Beirut.
Blinken stated that the exchange of rockets and missiles between the two sides highlights the urgent need for a cessation of hostilities. He pointed out that while Israel has been targeting Hezbollah in Beirut, the militant group has been launching projectiles into northern Israel on a daily basis since October 7.
During a news conference in Italy, Blinken underscored the critical nature of achieving a ceasefire to prevent further casualties and damage. He emphasized that stopping the flow of rockets and missiles in both directions is paramount to de-escalating the situation.
As Israel's cabinet deliberated on a temporary ceasefire, the Israeli military conducted a series of airstrikes on Beirut's southern suburbs. The bombardment, which included 20 strikes in two minutes, represents one of the most intense campaigns near the Lebanese capital since the conflict began over two months ago.
Tragically, the strikes resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals and left 37 others injured in the Noweiri area of central Beirut, according to the Lebanese health ministry.
The situation remains volatile as efforts continue to secure a ceasefire and bring an end to the violence that has plagued the region. International diplomatic initiatives are ongoing to facilitate dialogue and negotiation between the conflicting parties in the hopes of achieving a lasting peace.
