US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Jordan on Thursday for crucial discussions in the aftermath of the Syrian government's sudden collapse. Blinken is scheduled to meet with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and King Abdullah to address the potential repercussions of the Assad regime's fall.
Blinken's primary agenda includes talks on US support for an inclusive, Syrian-led transition towards establishing an accountable and representative government. He aims to emphasize four key principles that the US expects from a transition and new government:
- Clear commitments to fully respect the rights of minorities
- Facilitate the flow of humanitarian assistance to all in need
- Prevent Syria from being used as a base for terrorism or posing a threat to its neighbors
- Ensure the secure and safe destruction of any chemical or biological weapons stockpiles
During his visit, Blinken reiterated the US's commitment to recognizing and supporting a new Syrian government chosen by the Syrian people through an inclusive and transparent process that adheres to the aforementioned principles. He also called upon all nations to back an inclusive and transparent transition process while refraining from external interference.
In addition to discussions on the Syrian crisis, Blinken and Jordanian leaders are expected to delve into broader regional issues, including efforts towards achieving a ceasefire and securing a hostage deal in Gaza.
