The US Secret Service Director reassured Americans on Monday about the security measures in place for the upcoming Republican National Convention (RNC) following the recent assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.
In a statement, the Director expressed confidence in the security plan developed by the Secret Service RNC coordinator and their partners. The plan has been reviewed and strengthened in response to the shooting incident that occurred on Saturday.
The Secret Service Director acknowledged the agency's presence at the Trump rally where the shooting took place, offering condolences to the family and friends of Corey Comperatore, a firefighter who tragically lost his life during the event in Butler, Pennsylvania.
During the incident, Secret Service agents acted swiftly, with the counter sniper team neutralizing the shooter and implementing protective measures to ensure the safety of former President Trump.
The Secret Service is actively participating in an independent review initiated by President Joe Biden to investigate the circumstances of the shooting, understand how it occurred, and identify measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Furthermore, the Secret Service Director mentioned that additional security enhancements were provided to former President Trump's security detail in June. Following the shooting, additional changes have been made to the security detail to ensure his safety during the convention and the remainder of the campaign.
