Rep. Donald McEachin, a Richmond Democrat who represented Virginia’s 4th Congressional District, died Monday of the secondary effects of colorectal cancer, according to a statement released by his office. He was 61.
Tara Rountree, McEachin’s chief of staff, said in the statement that McEachin had been battling the cancer since 2013.
McEachin was first elected to Virginia’s 4th District in 2016, when the district included parts of Chesapeake and Suffolk. The district boundaries were changed in 2020 and took up most of the area between Richmond and Hampton Roads. Earlier this month, he was reelected for his fourth term.
McEachin fought for civil rights and LGBTQ protections as well as curbing gun violence and environmental causes.
McEachin is survived by his wife, Colette McEachin, and their three adult children.
