US President Joe Biden confirms plans to run for a second term in office in 2024

US President Joe Biden has confirmed that he intends to run for a second term in office.

He confirmed the news just hours before he arrived in Ireland for a four-day visit to our shores.

There have been question marks about whether the 80-year-old would be able to run for another stint in the Oval Office.

Mr Biden will be 82 by the time the US Presidential Elections are held in 2024.

Speaking in Washington DC ahead of the annual White House Easter Egg Roll, Mr Biden appeared to confirm that he would run again.

He said: “I plan on at least another three or four Easter Egg Rolls. Maybe five, maybe fix. What the hell? I don’t know.

“I plan on running [for the Presidency in 2024]. But we’re not prepared to announce it yet.”

If Mr Biden was elected for a second term, he would be 86 by the time his stint in the White House came to an end.

It is unclear, however, if Vice President Kamala Harris would join Mr Biden on the Democrat ticket.

It also remains unknown whether former President Donald Trump will run for the Republican Party following his defeat to Mr Biden in 2020.

Although he announced a White House bid last November, he is currently facing criminal charges in a New York court.

Just last week, Mr Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts following accusations that he falsified business records arising from a hush money payment to a porn star during his 2016 campaign.

The investigation is scrutinising six-figure payments made to porn actor Stormy Daniels.

He became the first former or sitting President to be charged in a criminal case.

The other possible contender for the Republican nomination, Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, has yet to fully publicly declare his intention to run.
