US Pauses Shipment Of Bombs To Israel Amid Concerns

Ukraine receives shipment of U.S. military aid at Boryspil airport

The United States has halted a shipment of bombs to Israel due to worries about their possible utilization in a Rafah incursion. The shipment, which was delayed last week, consists of 1,800 bombs weighing 2,000 pounds and 1,700 bombs weighing 500 pounds. A US official expressed particular concern about the impact of the 2,000-pound bombs in dense urban settings, citing previous instances in Gaza.

Israeli leaders have been signaling a future invasion of the southern Gaza city of Rafah, despite public statements from the US and others advising against such a ground operation. The Biden administration has urged for a comprehensive plan to safeguard over a million civilians in Rafah and prevent a worsening of the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Israel recently conducted a 'limited' operation in Rafah by taking control of a crucial border crossing with Egypt, a move described by the US as limited but with potential for escalation. The State Department has reiterated its opposition to a major military operation in Rafah, emphasizing the need to protect civilians and avoid further destabilization.

While Israel has expressed intentions for a significant ground operation in Rafah, the US has emphasized that detailed plans are not yet finalized. Discussions between the two countries have been ongoing, with the US reviewing proposed weapons transfers to Israel that could be used in Rafah.

The pause in shipments of the two types of bombs is part of this review process, with no final decision made on how to proceed. The potential impact of 2,000-pound bombs, known for their destructive capabilities, especially in densely populated areas like Gaza, has raised concerns among experts.

The US is also considering the sale or transfer of other munitions, including Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) kits to Israel, although these transfers are not imminent. The Pentagon has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to Israel's security, emphasizing the continued support through security assistance.
