Golf legend Fred Couples has claimed Will Zalatoris rejected a big money offer to join LIV Golf, worth a whopping $130m (£110m).
Couples has the same agent as Zalatoris, who has reportedly made around $14.3m (£12m) in career earnings during his three full seasons as a professional. The 26-year-old is yet to win a major championship, but has come close on three occasions.
In 2021, he finished second at the Masters behind Hideki Matsuyama, before losing out to Justing Thomas at the 2022 PGA Championship in a playoff. He then tied for second with Scottie Scheffler at the 2022 US Open, with Matt Fitzpatrick coming out on top.
Zalatoris has previously said he has no desire to make the jump to LIV, with the goal of winning a major the entire reason he plays the sport in the first place. "I've never done this for money. Ever," he said on In Depth With Graham Bensinger.
"If the US Open had a $100,000 purse, I'd still show up to the US Open. I don't know what it was this year, $17 million or something outrageous.
"I'm in this to go win a major, that's my career goal. There's no amount of money I would give to trade that for a trophy.
"There's no amount of money that could make me give up on my dreams. Especially with the amount of silver medals I've got hanging around my house now, I'll happily trade them all in for one win."
And Couples has claimed Zalatoris rejected two offers from LIV, telling the Orange County Register they initially offered Zalatoris $35m before upping it to $130m. "I don't know anything about the LIV Tour, except they overpay all of them," Couples said.
"Money is zero object [for LIV]. I give Will a lot of credit; he wants [to stay with] the PGA Tour."
