US Open: Ons Jabeur to face Iga Swiatek in women’s final after contrasting wins

Ons Jabeur will face world No1 Iga Swiatek in her second successive Grand Slam final after contrasting routes at the US Open.

Caroline Garcia had gone into the final major of the season unbeaten in 13 matches but could find no way past the mercurial Jabeur, who comfortably won 6-1, 6-3.

Garcia’s winning streak pales into insignificance compared to the 37 consecutive victories that Swiatek enjoyed earlier this season before that was undone at Wimbledon.

She has struggled for her rhythm and form since then but produced a great fightback from a set down to defeat Aryna Sabalenka 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a far tighter second semi-final.

Swiatek, who will be bidding for a third Grand Slam title in Saturday’s final having twice won the French Open, said: “I wasn’t expecting too much from myself because Aryna’s a good server and I was not sure if I was going to break her back. But I feel like I just played on an even level, so that’s great.”

Jabeur is enjoying the best season of her career and said she expected to put on a stronger showing for her second Grand Slam final.

“It feels more real just to be in the finals again,” she said. “At Wimbledon, I was kind of just living the dream and I couldn’t believe it. Even just after the match, I was just going to do my things and not realising it was an amazing achievement already. But now I just hope I’m getting used to it.

“This final, I’m going full in, I’m going for everything. Definitely also learning from Rome’s final, Madrid and other ones. But I feel very positive about this one. The most important thing is not to regret because I’m going to give it all on this one. Even if this one is not going to happen, I’m very sure that another one will come.”
