What a day for Australian tennis!

So the US Open quarter-finals await for both Nick Kyrgios and Ajla Tomljanovic after two mighty impressive fourth-round victories.

Not too many players blast Daniil Medvedev off the court, but that's exactly what Kyrgios did today with a display of power and precision that few in the world are capable of matching. He is riding high and charging into the last eight with dangerous confidence.

As for Tomljanovic, her win was built off steely resolve and a determination to give nothing away easily. After a hectic week in the spotlight, she could easily have wilted under early pressure but instead stood up, faced the challenge head on and fought her way on top.

Thanks for joining me, Andrew McGarry and Jessica Riga on the blog today, I'm sure we'll be back again soon as this US Open heats up. See you then!

Unforced errors

Ajla Tomljanovic tallied up 27 unforced errors out there, which looks pretty good when you consider Liudmila Samsonova racked up 56(!) of her own.

That's where the match was won and lost. It was a sloppy affair at times, but Tomljanovic was the more composed and handled the crunch moments better.

Key Event

Game, set, match! Ajla Tomljanovic is through to the QFs!

The Aussie charge in New York rolls on! That's a hell of an effort to back up from the win over Serena Williams, and Ajla Tomljanovic had to show incredible guts to fight through that dogged first set.

She saw off eight set points in the first to Liudmila Samsonova, a 20-minute game late in that set and a crunch tiebreak duel to set the match up, and then stepped into the second set with confidence and authority. Samsonova looked tired and broken after that first set, and Tomljanovic took full advantage.

She'll have to up her game again in the quarter-finals, but right now Ajla Tomljanovic is meeting every challenge head on.

By Dean Bilton

Second set (1-0 Tomljanovic): Samsonova 1 - Tomljanovic 5*

It's on Ajla's racquet now. Four points away from the quarter-finals.

15-0. Tomljanovic stepping into the court. trying to be assertive. Samsonova held on for a while but missed the backhand eventually.

30-0! Samsonova played a good point there, but made a mess of the final drop shot and put it halfway up the net. Ajla nearly there...

30-15. Terrific return from Samsonova.

40-15! Two match points to Ajla Tomljanovic!

And she's done it! The quarter-finals await Ajla Tomljanovic!

Second set (1-0 Tomljanovic): Samsonova 0* - Tomljanovic 5

After the war of attrition that was the first set, this one has been a breeze for Ajla Tomljanovic. Samsonova will serve to avoid the bagel and extend the match.

Classy drop shot from Samsonova makes it 15-0. She's not going to die wondering.

Samsonova has decided to go out in a blaze of glory. That was the hardest she's hit a ball all night. Unfortunately for her, it missed by a mile. 15-15.

30-15. Wide on the backhand from Tomljanovic.

30-30. So many errors in this match. Another from Samsonova there.

40-30. That's what she's capable of though! Great forehand winner.

Deuce. Samsonova floats a backhand long. Tomljanovic just trying to be a wall here, letting Samsonova make the mistakes.

Yeesh! What a shot from Samsonova! She dug out a scorching forehand winner to take the advantage.

Back to deuce, Tomljanovic playing some shots again now.

Advantage Samsonova again.

And then back to deuce on a fantastic cross-court backhand from Tomljanovic!

Sloppy from Tomljanovic, advantage Samsonova.

And there's the hold from Samsonova. No bagel today, but Tomljanovic will now serve for the match.

Celebration time for Nick Kyrgios

Second set (1-0 Tomljanovic): Samsonova 0 - Tomljanovic 4*

So Tomljanovic is two games away, and is now on serve.

Samsonova is throwing all her power at every ground stroke, but it ain't coming off. 15-0.

Make that 30-0. Things are moving QUICKLY out there now.

30-15. Samsonova gets Tomljanovic stretching and forces the error on the backhand.

40-15. Excellent serve. Samsonova has struggled to return Ajla's first serves all match.

Bang! Huge forehand from Samsonova. 40-30.

And there's the hold for Tomljanovic! She's a game away from the quarter-finals!

By Dean Bilton

Second set (1-0 Tomljanovic): Samsonova 0* - Tomljanovic 3

Samsonova desperately needs a hold here. Tomljanovic can sense that she could just about kill the match off right here, right now.

0-15 on a big Ajla return.

0-30. Tomljanovic just keeping the ball in play and letting a tired Samsonova make the mistakes.

Great backhand from Samsonova across the court to pull it back to 15-30.

15-40. Samsonova is just going for bombs with every shot now. Two break points for Tomljanovic.

And there's the second break! Samsonova just about donezo here.

What a win for Nick Kyrgios

The crowd is going OFF as Kyrgios hits signed tennis balls in to the crowd.

Everyone is excited by all that. Kyrgios hit a shedload of winners (53), broke the world number one FIVE times, and had a first serve percentage of 71.

Aside from a brain fade in the second set, he was the man in charge for much of this match and he thoroughly deserved the victory.

If he gets through against Khachanov, he will face either Matteo Berrettini or Casper Ruud for a place in the final. Anything can happen, and Kyrgios could well have a big meltdown that ruins his chances - but that is a very doable route to a second straight major final.

Second set (1-0 Tomljanovic): Samsonova 0 - Tomljanovic 2*

Ajla Tomljanovic is in a fantastic position now, and is playing the better tennis. A big hold here and she is well on her way.

15-0, unreturnable serve.

Samsonova is rattled now, that was an erratic swipe at a forehand. 30-0.

40-0. Ajla moving as well as she has all match.

Tomljanovic holds to love! Only looks one winner right about now.

Nick Kyrgios speaks after his win

"I still can't believe the boneheaded play I made over here (coming round the net to hit a winner) - it's going to be on ScoreCenter. That's ok!

Daniil is the defending champion, but I played really well. Where better to do it. A packed house in New York, I'm extremely blessed.

Kyrgios thanks his team, and his girlfriend for helping him stay on track. But he says he doesn't want to "let them down".

"I'm just glad I'm able to show you in New York what I'm capable of ... it's taken me 27 years (to do it)!"

By Dean Bilton

Second set (1-0 Tomljanovic): Samsonova 0* - Tomljanovic 1

Ajla is striding around the court like a player in control. Samsonova, even in this early stage of the second set, seems to be on the ropes a little.

But a good serve there will help. 15-0.

Samsonova throws her weight behind a forehand but misses. 15-15.

Stunning from Ajla Tomljanovic! She had to hustle to even reach that ball, only to whip a backhand down the line and past Samsonova. 15-30.

The Aussie is charging now! She stands up and through a backhand to go up 15-40. Two break points.

Samsonova settles with a good serve. 30-40.

Double fault! Tomljanovic gets the early break!

By Dean Bilton

Second set (1-0 Tomljanovic): Samsonova 0 - Tomljanovic 0*

A lengthy break between sets as both players try to recover from that slog of a first set. Samsonova looks to be struggling on a knee a little, and is definitely looking tired.

Tomljanovic leads 30-0.

40-15 now. Samsonova a little timid.

Game Tomljanovic. Comfortable hold, and she's looking powerful right now.

Fourth set (2-1 Kyrgios): Kyrgios 5* - Medvedev 2

Nick Kyrgios is THIS close to a huge victory. Four good serves, maybe?

Kyrgios serves deep, Medvedev gets it back, Kyrgios slices a volley into the net! 0-15

But the Aussie produces a good first serve and medvedev error makes it 15-15

Medvedev goes for another drop shot and Kyrgios puts away the winner, and quickly gets another point  - match point, 40-15

By Dean Bilton

Key Event

Ajla Tomljanovic wins the first set 7-6 (10/8)!

What a gruelling battle this is proving to be. Not vintage tennis from either player, but a whole lot of guts. Tomljanovic saved eight set points in that set before cashing in in the tiebreak.

Both players look fatigued, errors are dictating the game, but the Aussie has her nose in front.

By Andrew McGarry

Fourth set (2-1 Kyrgios): Kyrgios 5 - Medvedev 1*

Medvedev on his last chance - he wins the first two points, but then hits a backhand into the net. 30-15

And another! He holds, but now it's on the Kyrgios racquet. Can he finish it out?
