US Officials Working On Ceasefire Proposal Between Israel And Hezbollah

U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan speaks during a press briefing at the White House

Senior United States officials are actively engaged in negotiations to establish a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah. Sources indicate that a proposal may be announced as early as tonight.

The initiative to mediate a ceasefire gained momentum within the Biden administration following a conversation between President Joe Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, and top Israeli official Ron Dermer on Monday.

It is anticipated that the proposed ceasefire plan will be presented by the United States in collaboration with other nations. However, the ultimate success of the plan hinges on the agreement of both Israel and Hezbollah.

Proposal announcement expected soon.

Despite the ongoing talks, a European diplomat has expressed doubts about the likelihood of a successful resolution, citing the rapidly deteriorating situation in the region. The diplomat emphasized that while discussions are ongoing, the situation on the ground continues to escalate.

President Biden has been actively engaging with world leaders during the UN General Assembly in New York City this week to address the escalating tensions in the Middle East. Notably, Biden discussed the matter with French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday, as confirmed by the White House.
