Former President Jimmy Carter sits on the Atlanta Falcons bench before the first half of an NFL football game between the Atlanta Falcons and the San Diego Chargers, Oct. 23, 2016, in Atlanta.

The Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Lisa Franchetti, expressed deep sorrow on Sunday over the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, a distinguished naval officer. President Carter, who served in the US Navy before entering politics, was remembered for his exemplary service and dedication to his country.

President Carter's naval career began after studying reactor technology and nuclear physics at Union College in New York. He was assigned to the submarine force and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. Notably, he was selected by Adm. Hyman Rickover to be a senior officer on the pre-commissioning crew of the Seawolf, the second US nuclear submarine.

Adm. Franchetti highlighted President Carter's humble beginnings on a Georgia peanut farm and his belief that his time in the Navy shaped his moral character. She emphasized that his naval service instilled in him values such as courage, self-sacrifice, idealism, and self-discipline, which guided him throughout his life.

President Jimmy Carter's naval service and subsequent contributions to public service were praised by Adm. Franchetti and the US Navy as a whole. His dedication to his country and his unwavering commitment to serving others will be remembered and honored for years to come.
