US national security adviser Mike Waltz has outlined the key principles that will guide upcoming peace talks between top Trump administration officials and senior Russian representatives to end the war in Ukraine. In a recent interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Waltz emphasized that the conflict in Ukraine cannot be resolved through military means.
Waltz highlighted the importance of US support for Ukraine's security, pointing to an economic investment deal offered to Ukraine by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has not yet signed the agreement, Waltz urged him to consider the benefits of partnering with the United States to boost the Ukrainian economy.
Regarding long-term military security guarantees for Ukraine, Waltz suggested that a European-led approach would be most effective. This stance aligns with President Donald Trump's vision for ending the war, which has raised concerns about potential concessions to Russia that could sideline Ukraine and exclude European involvement in the peace process.

Waltz, along with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Middle East special envoy Steve Witkoff, is set to travel to Saudi Arabia for discussions with Russian officials. While Ukraine was reportedly not informed about this delegation, Zelensky has previously stated that any peace agreement must involve Kyiv.
Waltz noted that European allies have been actively engaged in discussions on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Trump recently spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron and announced an upcoming meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to address the ongoing crisis.
The White House National Security Council has been contacted for further details on Trump's conversation with Macron, as efforts continue to find a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
