US military tanker flies over Glasgow after leaving Italy navy base

A US military plane has been tracked hovering over Greater Glasgow.

The aircraft cruised the skies over Cumbernauld and Airdrie this afternoon having departed an American Navy base in Italy.

Flight tracking website FlightRadar24 followed the Lockheed KC-130T as it headed en-route to Reykjavík in Iceland.

It had been flying at an altitude of 22,000ft with a speed of 348mph, Glasgow Live reports.

According to website Navair, the KC-130T is used by both the United States Navy/United States Marine Corps as a 'multi-role, long-range, land-based tactical aircraft', and provides 'logistic support and air-to-air refueling to fleet operating forces'.

They add that the KC-130T can also carry 92 ground troops or 64 paratroopers and equipment as a tactical transport and can be configured as a medical evacuation platform - capable of carrying 74 patients on stretchers and their attendants.

It comes weeks after Glasgow residents spotted a UK Air Force Osprey military aircraft flying over the city prior to landing at Glasgow Airport.
