The U.S. military conducted a series of airstrikes in Syria targeting Islamic State group camps, resulting in the reported deaths of up to 35 militants, according to U.S. Central Command. The strikes, which took place in the central Syrian desert on Monday evening, focused on multiple locations and senior leaders of the group.
These operations followed recent joint efforts with Iraqi forces to combat IS militants in Iraq. While the Pentagon acknowledges that the Islamic State group continues to pose a threat in the region, it notes that the group's power has significantly diminished compared to its strength a decade ago when it controlled vast territories in Iraq and Syria.
U.S. Central Command emphasized that the recent airstrikes in Syria are intended to disrupt the Islamic State group's capacity to plan, organize, and carry out attacks against civilians, as well as U.S. and allied forces in the area. The command also confirmed that there were no reports of civilian casualties resulting from the strikes.
