The US Marine Orchestra & Cathedral Choir and Armed Forces Chorus delivered a moving performance of “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” during the funeral service of former President Jimmy Carter. The poignant rendition was accompanied by the display of a naval officer’s hat, symbolizing Carter’s Navy background.
Jimmy Carter's journey into the Navy began with his studies in reactor technology and nuclear physics at Union College in Schenectady, New York. Following his education, Carter was assigned to the submarine force, where he served in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. Notably, he was selected by Adm. Hyman Rickover, known as the “Father of the Nuclear Navy,” to be a senior officer on the pre-commissioning crew of the Seawolf, the second US nuclear submarine.
After concluding his active duty in the Navy in 1953, Carter transitioned into civilian life. He dedicated time to raising his children, managing the family peanut farm, and venturing into politics. In 1962, Carter achieved his first political milestone by winning a seat in the Georgia Senate.
