Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s dissolution of the war cabinet does not change the Biden administration’s “fundamental assessment” of the war in Gaza, according to State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
Miller stated that the US government's position remains consistent despite the recent developments in Israel. He emphasized that decisions regarding the war cabinet are internal matters for the Israeli government and its people.
Regarding the ceasefire proposal, Miller refrained from speculating on the impact of the war cabinet dissolution. He mentioned that ongoing discussions with Israel, Qatar, and Egypt would continue regardless of the political changes in Israel.
Miller assured that the US would maintain open and honest dialogues with Israeli officials, irrespective of the composition of the government. He reiterated the commitment to engaging with the Israeli government on critical issues related to the conflict in Gaza.
In response to the Israel Defense Forces' announcement of a “tactical pause” in southern Gaza to facilitate aid distribution, Miller expressed the US government's support for this decision. Despite initial reports of Netanyahu's discontent with the move, the US welcomed the temporary ceasefire along the specified route.
The State Department's stance underscores the importance of humanitarian efforts and diplomatic engagement in resolving the conflict in Gaza. The US remains actively involved in facilitating discussions and promoting peace in the region, emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue and cooperation among all parties involved.
