US intelligence officials: Iran lacks full control over proxy groups

Joe Biden Benjamin Netanyahu

In recent developments concerning Iran's proxy groups across the Middle East, US intelligence officials have revealed that Iran may not have full control over these entities. This assessment contradicts the prevailing belief that Tehran exerts authoritative influence over these groups, which are driven by radical Islamic ideologies and committed to the destruction of Israel as well as launching attacks against US forces.

Among the prominent proxy groups associated with Iran are Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, various militias in Syria and Iraq, and the Houthis in Yemen. However, according to the US intelligence officials, Iran's control over these groups might not be as extensive as previously believed.

Meanwhile, President Biden has issued an executive order, which punishes four Israeli settlers for their involvement in attacking Palestinians in the West Bank. This move comes amid ongoing protests from pro-Palestinian demonstrators who continue to follow the president on his trips. During a recent visit to Michigan, similar protests took place, highlighting the growing tensions surrounding this issue.

However, President Biden's executive order has caused a rift with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The order focuses on sanctioning violent West Bank extremists but only targets four individuals who initiated and led riots. Netanyahu's office responded by stating that Israel would handle its own law enforcement and that exceptional measures were unnecessary since Israel acts against all Israelis who break the law, wherever they may be.

In other news, Israel and Palestinians are eagerly expecting a potential deal that could secure the release of more hostages from Hamas captivity. Heads of Israeli intelligence, the CIA, Egyptian intelligence, and even the Qatari prime minister recently gathered in Paris to work on a proposal. Leaks from this proposal suggest it involves swapping numerous Palestinian prisoners for Israeli hostages, providing additional aid to the Gaza Strip, and implementing a ceasefire that would position Israeli troops away from population centers. A senior Hamas representative has announced that the group will respond soon.

Amidst these ongoing developments, attention also turns to the US response regarding the recent killings of American service members by Iranian proxies. Since October, there have been 166 attacks on US positions in the region, with an additional 44 strikes on ships in the Red Sea attributed to Iranian proxies.

The region remains on edge as these various issues unfold, with both Iran's control over proxy groups and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continuing to generate significant concern and international attention.
