US Embassy explosion: Man charged with planting fake IED in bomb hoax

A man from Bayswater has been charged with carrying out a bomb hoax after allegedly planting a fake IED near to the US Embassy in London.

Daniel Parmenter, 43, is accused of leaving a device that resembled a bomb near to the embassy in Nine Elms on Friday last week.

The incident sparked a major security alert, as the area was evacuated before the package was detonated by specialist police officers in a controlled explosion.

The Metropolitan Police said Parmenter was arrested on Sunday and a search of his home in Kildare Terrace, Bayswater was carried out.

The force did not reveal that Parmenter had been charged until after his first court appearance.

It said he appeared at Ealing magistrates court on Monday, to face the charge of “bomb hoax – placing an article with intent”.

According to the charge, Parmenter is accused of “placing an article, namely a device that resembled an IED, at the US Embassy, Nine Elms, with the intention of inducing in another a belief that the said article was likely to explode or ignite and thereby cause personal injury or damage to property.”

The Met said Parmenter has been remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on Monday, 23 December.

The force also added that it is not linking this incident with other reports of suspicious packages in recent days.
