US Education Secretary Miguel Cardona has voiced his deep concern over incidents of antisemitism at Columbia University. He highlighted a Civil Rights investigation that was initiated into the university for alleged violations related to antisemitic harassment.

Cardona emphasized that antisemitic hate on college campuses is unacceptable and expressed his worry about the situation at Columbia University. The Office for Civil Rights had launched an investigation in November 2023 under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.

The Department of Education had previously announced investigations into several institutions for alleged violations concerning antisemitic harassment. These investigations were conducted under Title VI, which mandates that educational institutions must provide a discrimination-free environment for all students.

Cardona reiterated that while details of ongoing investigations cannot be disclosed, it is essential for every student to feel safe and included at school. He emphasized that hate has no place in educational settings and called on all education leaders to take a firm stand against antisemitism, anti-Arab, anti-Muslim sentiment, and all forms of hate.
