US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has urged for a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah amidst escalating tensions in the region. This call comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denied reports of an imminent ceasefire in Lebanon.
During a news conference in London, Austin emphasized the importance of pursuing a diplomatic solution to the conflict. He stated that despite recent escalations, there is still a possibility for a peaceful resolution.
The US and its allies have proposed a 21-day ceasefire, but Netanyahu has expressed Israel's intention to continue military operations with full force. Austin stressed that a diplomatic approach is crucial to ensure the safe return of displaced civilians on both sides of the border.
Austin also issued a warning against any attempts to exploit the crisis or expand the conflict, emphasizing that the US is committed to protecting its forces and personnel in the Middle East.
Furthermore, Austin highlighted the significance of a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah as a step towards facilitating negotiations for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
British Defense Secretary John Healey and Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles have voiced their support for the proposed 21-day ceasefire. Healey mentioned that Israel has indicated its willingness to consider the ceasefire proposal.
