Military leaders from the U.S. and China recently concluded routine talks in Beijing, marking a resumption of discussions that had been suspended for two years due to strained relations between the two countries. The officials engaged in bilateral Defense Policy Coordination Talks, addressing ongoing issues such as Taiwan, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and tensions in the South China Sea.

The talks, led by a U.S. delegation, aimed to foster communication and prevent potential conflicts, despite the long-standing differences between the two nations on various issues. The recent meetings followed the attendance of a U.S. representative at the Xiangshan forum in Beijing, a defense conference akin to the Shangri-La Dialogue.

Communication between the U.S. and China had ceased in 2021 amidst escalating tensions over matters like Taiwan's sovereignty, the origins of COVID-19, and economic disputes. While discussions resumed after a meeting between the U.S. and Chinese presidents, the future of these talks remains uncertain, especially with the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
