A US Border Patrol agent, David Maland, who was tragically killed during a traffic stop in Vermont near the Canadian border, is set to be laid to rest with full military honors at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. The incident occurred on January 20 on Interstate 91 in Conventry, where Maland, 44, was fatally shot during the stop. The driver of the vehicle opened fire on Maland and other agents, leading to a shootout that resulted in the death of the driver's companion. Both individuals were associated with a group known as the Zizians, which authorities suspect may be connected to multiple deaths across three states.
Originally from Minnesota, Maland had a distinguished military and law enforcement career. He served in the Air Force and the State Department before joining the Border Patrol. During his time in the Air Force, Maland played a crucial role in protecting bases, personnel, and property, including serving on security duty at the Pentagon during the September 11 attacks in 2001. He was awarded the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and other honors for his service.

Described as a loving son, brother, uncle, fiance, and dedicated colleague, Maland was known for his kind heart, fighting spirit, and unwavering commitment to his country. As a K-9 handler at both the State Department and the Border Patrol, he was recognized for his courage and dedication to safeguarding his fellow Americans. Minnesota state Rep. Krista Knudsen, Maland's cousin, praised his service and bravery, highlighting his selfless devotion to duty.
In a statement released by his family, Maland was remembered as a warm and inviting individual who will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew him. His legacy of service, sacrifice, and strength will endure as a testament to his unwavering commitment to protecting and serving his country.
