The United States has recently approved a $165 million weapons sales deal with Israel, specifically for heavy-duty tank trailers. This announcement was made by the State Department on Thursday. The approved systems include spare and repair parts, tool kits, and technical and logistics support. However, these items are not expected to be delivered until the year 2027.
Earlier this year, the U.S. unveiled a significant $20 billion weapons support package for Israel, which includes F-15 fighter jets. Similar to the tank trailers, these systems are also scheduled for delivery in the coming years and are not anticipated to impact current Israeli military operations. Israel has been engaged in an 11-month-long conflict with Hamas militants in Gaza.
The Biden administration is facing the challenge of balancing its ongoing support for Israel with mounting pressure from lawmakers and the public to reduce military assistance due to the high number of civilian casualties in Gaza. As a response to these concerns, the U.S. has decided to halt the delivery of 2,000-pound bombs. This decision comes amidst continued Israeli airstrikes in densely populated civilian areas in Gaza.
