The United States ambassador to the United Nations is calling on Hamas to accept the latest ceasefire proposal and hostage deal following the UN Security Council's overwhelming support for it. The American representative emphasized that Israel has agreed to the deal and highlighted that the fighting could cease immediately if Hamas reciprocates.
Linda Thomas-Greenfield stated that the past eight months have been devastating for Israelis who lost loved ones due to the violence initiated by Hamas. She underscored that the Palestinian people have also suffered greatly in this conflict instigated by Hamas and emphasized the opportunity to pursue a different path.
The Security Council endorsed the US-drafted resolution with 14 votes in favor, zero against, and one abstention by Russia. The resolution's framework consists of three phases, including a ceasefire, the release of Israeli hostages, and the exchange of Palestinian prisoners. The ultimate goal is to achieve a permanent cessation of hostilities, the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the effective distribution of aid, and a substantial multiyear reconstruction effort in the region.
Thomas-Greenfield assured that the US would ensure Israel fulfills its commitments, while Egypt and Qatar would oversee Hamas's compliance. She also emphasized that the deal prohibits any alterations to Gaza's geography and reaffirms the commitment to a two-state solution.
