US Ambassador To UN Discusses Efforts To End Gaza Conflict

Rally demanding ceasefire in Gaza, in Tel Aviv

The U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, addressed the recent developments in the war in Gaza, highlighting the intensive efforts being made to shape outcomes and reach a resolution. The U.S. decision to veto a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza was explained as a strategic move to avoid a resolution that could potentially hinder ongoing negotiations and humanitarian efforts on the ground.

Thomas-Greenfield emphasized the importance of finding a path to secure the release of hostages, provide humanitarian assistance, and ultimately end the conflict. The U.S. has been actively engaged in working with allies and partners to facilitate negotiations and ensure that any ceasefire agreement does not favor Hamas or jeopardize the safety of the Palestinian people.

The Ambassador acknowledged the challenges of the negotiations and the round-the-clock efforts being made to address the immediate needs in Gaza while working towards a sustainable long-term solution. The U.S. has been collaborating closely with other nations, such as Algeria, to refine resolutions and proposals to support the negotiation process and prevent any negative impact on the ground.

Thomas-Greenfield reiterated the U.S. stance on not supporting a ceasefire that would only benefit Hamas and allow them to continue attacks on Israel while exploiting the Palestinian population. The goal is to achieve a ceasefire that provides a temporary pause for humanitarian aid delivery, followed by a longer-term extension leading to a permanent resolution of the conflict.

The Ambassador's remarks underscored the complexity of the situation in Gaza and the commitment of the U.S. and its partners to work towards a peaceful and sustainable resolution that prioritizes the well-being of all parties involved.
