US Agency Upgrades Tesla Power Steering Probe into Engineering Analysis

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has escalated its investigation into reports of power steering loss on certain Tesla models from a preliminary evaluation to an engineering analysis. This move signifies a more serious examination of the potential safety issues associated with the electric vehicle manufacturer's power steering system.

The NHTSA first opened an inquiry in June 2020 after receiving complaints from vehicle owners who experienced sudden power steering failures while driving their Teslas. The affected models include the 2015-2017 Model S sedans and the 2016-2017 Model X SUVs. It is estimated that approximately 90,000 vehicles could be impacted by the power steering issue.

During the initial evaluation, the NHTSA reviewed complaints from Tesla owners, analyzed crash data and other relevant information to assess the scope and severity of the problem. Based on the findings, the agency concluded that there was sufficient evidence to merit a deeper investigation, leading to the decision to upgrade the probe into an engineering analysis.

The engineering analysis phase will involve a more detailed examination of the power steering system, potentially including testing and analysis of affected vehicles. The objective is to better understand the root cause of the power steering failures and determine the necessary steps to address the issue and ensure the safety of Tesla drivers and passengers.

Tesla has acknowledged the power steering problem and has taken steps to resolve it. The company issued a Service Bulletin in March 2018, alerting customers about a potential power steering assist failure and offering to replace certain components to mitigate the risk. However, the NHTSA's decision to escalate the investigation suggests that the measures taken by Tesla may not have fully resolved the issue.

Power steering is a critical component that helps drivers maintain control of their vehicles, especially at lower speeds or during tight maneuvers. Losing power assistance while driving can significantly increase the effort required to steer a vehicle, potentially leading to accidents or other hazardous situations. Given the rising popularity of Tesla vehicles and the widespread use of power steering systems in the automotive industry, it is essential to address any potential safety concerns promptly.

The NHTSA's engineering analysis will provide valuable insights into the cause and extent of the power steering problem in Tesla vehicles. Depending on the findings, it may result in a recall or other regulatory actions to ensure the necessary repairs are made to affected vehicles. Tesla owners who have experienced power steering issues should continue to report them to the NHTSA to facilitate the investigation and help determine the most appropriate course of action.

It is important to note that Tesla has not yet issued an official statement regarding the NHTSA's decision to upgrade the probe into an engineering analysis. However, the company has a history of cooperating with regulatory agencies and taking steps to address safety concerns promptly.

As the investigation progresses, Tesla owners and potential buyers will eagerly await the outcome and any resulting actions or recommendations. In the interest of consumer safety, it is imperative that automakers and regulatory bodies work together to identify and resolve any potential issues promptly, ensuring the continued trust and confidence of the public in the electric vehicle industry as a whole.
