A massive search operation is currently underway at Moonee Beach, a stretch of coastline north of Coffs Harbour, New South Wales. The focus of this desperate effort is 21-year-old Taewoo Kim, who vanished after entering the water on Thursday afternoon.
Taewoo is described as slim, of Asian appearance and about 175cm tall with black hair and brown eyes by NSW Police. He was last spotted taking a dip around 1pm on Thursday. It wasn’t until Friday night, at about 9:30pm, that the alarm was raised when he failed to return to his home.
As soon as the cops got wind of the situation, they hit the beach and managed to find some of Taewoo’s belongings. Coffs-Clarence Police District Inspector Ben Atkinson said, “Police located a mobile, a passport and a backpack and some clothing belonging to the missing person.”
By Saturday, it was all hands on deck with a full-scale search kicking off. The Marine Area Command, SES, Surf Life Saving, and Marine Rescue NSW have all joined forces in the hope of bringing Taewoo home safely.
Inspector Atkinson revealed that the delay in reporting Taewoo missing is now part of their investigation. “That’s forming part of our investigation, but as a result of being notified we’ve initiated a land and air search,” he said, per ABC News.
Moonee Beach isn’t your average sun-and-surf paradise. This unpatrolled stretch of sand has earned a grim reputation among locals for its treacherous conditions. In a shocking reminder of its dangers, the beach claimed four lives in just one week back in December 2018.
The beach’s remote location, accessible only via a headland pathway linked to Dammerel Crescent at Emerald Beach, adds to its perilous nature.
As the search continues, authorities are urging anyone with information about Taewoo’s whereabouts to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
