Urgent recall issued for popular snack sold in Spar over fears of 'adverse' health effects

Shoppers are being warned to check their presses after the Food Safety Authority of Ireland issued a recall notice for a popular snack.

Batches of various brands of organic tortilla chips which are sold in stores including SPAR are being recalled due to the possible presence of tropane alkaloids. Tropane alkaloids are described as being naturally occurring toxins which are present in certain plant species.

In a statement, the Food Safety Authority said: "Adverse effects in humans can include changes in heart rate, decreased salivary and sweat secretion, pupil dilation, dizziness, headache, and nausea. Contamination of food can occur if parts (mostly seeds) of tropane alkaloid-containing plant species are unintentionally harvested with agricultural crops."

Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with the implicated batches. A batch of Amaizin Tortilla Chips have also been recalled from stores.

The affected batches of Tortilla chips being recalled this week include SPAR Natural Tortilla Chips with batch dates of 3 January and 28 February 2022, Amaizin Tortilla Chips between August 13 and March 5, 2022, and Trafo Organic Tortilla chips with the best before dates of 10 October and 3 January 2023.

Meanwhile, earlier this week shoppers who may have bought Baxter & Greene's Chicken Korma sold at Dunnes recently were urged to check labels as cashew nuts were undeclared by the manufacturers, which may negatively affect anyone with allergies to nuts. The notice from the FSAI reads: "The implicated batches of Baxter & Greene Chicken Korma contain cashew nuts that are not mentioned on the label.

"This may make the batches unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of cashew nuts. Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in Dunnes Stores supplied with the implicated batches."
