Urgent police appeal after child injured by flares set off by protestors at Bury AFC cup match

Police have issued an urgent appeal for witnesses after a child was left injured by flares set off by protestors at a Bury AFC cup match last week. The youngster and a footballer sustained minor injuries after the flares were set off into Bury AFC's ground during an FA Cup qualifier on September 3.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police are now continuing to appeal for witnesses following the Bury AFC v North Shields football match. At around 1pm, police received reports that a group of male protestors outside had been hurling flares towards the inside of the stadium.

Enquiries are still ongoing to identify the males involved after a child and a footballer sustained minor injuries. Police added they were keen to 'reassure the community' that it was an isolated incident and is not connected to the reports of fireworks being set off towards homes and cars nearby, which left many residents 'fearful in their own homes.'

Police reissued their appeal on Wednesday (September 7) as enquiries into the incident continue. Anyone with any information that could assist investigations are being urged to contact police immediately.

Chief Inspector Samantha Goldie, of GMP Bury Division, previously said: "Whilst we anticipate protests taking place and facilitate them where possible, we absolutely do not tolerate violence. This is a public event and ultimately we want everyone to be safe and have an enjoyable time.

"Thankfully this reckless and dangerous action by a few did not result in serious injury. We are keen to speak to anyone who might have more information that could help identify those involved. If you witnessed this incident, or have footage, please share it with us as soon as possible."

Anyone with any information that could assist with police enquiries is encouraged to call 0161 856 8181 quoting incident number 1415 of 03/09/22. Alternatively, you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
