Urgent Edinburgh Fringe traffic warning ahead of festival launch

A warning has been issued by Traffic Scotland ahead of the start of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival later this week.

The festival will return for its 75th edition on Friday, and over the month hundreds of thousands of tourists will flock to Edinburgh. Artists and performers will take to stages across the capital for shows all throughout August.

As a result, there will be heavier traffic than normal in the city according to Traffic Scotland — particularly the M8, A720 City Bypass, the A1, and the Queensferry Crossing.

Taking to Twitter to share the update, Traffic Scotland wrote: "@edfringe is back celebrating 75 years of the event. The festivities kick off from Friday 5th August.

"Traffic will be heavier than normal on the #A720 #M8 #M9 and #M90."

Traffic Scotland also shared a link to its website, where it has added additional information about the traffic warning. It wrote: "If you plan to drive to a show, make sure to check ahead for Roadworks and Current Incidents.

"Whilst Traffic Scotland only deals with the trunk network, local roads in Edinburgh are managed by Edinburgh City Council. You can follow their dedicated traffic and travel account on Twitter @edintravel."

In addition, the traffic service recommended that people make use of public transport "to avoid congestion and travel safely into the city".

It added: "Lothian Buses (Lothian Buses – Local bus services in and around Edinburgh) operate across the city, and Edinburgh Trams (Homepage | Edinburgh Trams) connects the city centre with the airport.

"You can also travel into the city by train using Scotrail services. You can find the latest service information here ScotRail Train Times | Plan your Journey | ScotRail."
