Urgent cooker safety warning as certain models pose carbon monoxide poisoning risk

Consumers who own ovens made by Belling, Stoves and New World are being urged to check whether their cooker requires a modification.

This is because certain models with gas grills pose a serious carbon monoxide poisoning risk if used incorrectly. The gas range cookers have been found to have a seal fault on the grill element, which can lead to dangerous levels of carbon monoxide being produced, potentially causing injury and death.

The modification will ensure that even if the grill is used incorrectly, there will be no unsafe build-up of carbon monoxide. If a customer has an affected model, they can continue to use it until the fix has been made so long as they use the oven in-line with its manual.

The manuals specify that users should ensure that the grill door is left fully open while the gas grill is in operation. To confirm if their cooker is affected and to organise the quick fix, customers should contact 0800 110 5728 or email consumersupport@glendimplex.com.

Earlier this year, Office for Product Safety and Standards Chief Executive Graham Russell spoke about the affected cookers, stating: "I urge consumers to ensure the door is always kept fully open when the grill is in operation and remind all consumers of the importance of following the safety instructions for their gas cookers.

A Stoves, Belling and New World spokesperson said: "Given the risk of carbon monoxide, we are contacting consumers to arrange booking of modifications to affected models as soon as possible.

"Until this modification has been made consideration must be taken in using the grill, as such we want to remind all customers that they must use the gas grill with the door open, as detailed in the instruction manual. Doing so poses no risk of carbon monoxide build up."

Consumers will need their model number, starting with 4444, and the serial number when contacting the company. This can be found by opening the main oven door. It is located on a badge on the frame below the oven cavity.

The spokesperson added: "We have stringent health and safety measures in place, and all our cookers are tested to industry standards and by the relevant industry bodies before they are made available to buy. We will continue to raise awareness of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and to encourage the highest standards of testing industry-wide."

The full list of affected models can be found here, consumers with one of these gas range cookers in their home should get in touch as soon as possible to organise the modification. Customers that have sold on any of these cookers are being urged to contact Stoves, Belling and New World with forwarding details.

In Scotland it is a legal requirement to have a carbon monoxide detector in any room where you have a carbon-fuelled appliance. This includes a gas oven grill.
