Upton bypass blocked by burnt out car 'deliberately' torched by thieves

The Upton bypass was closed earlier this week after a stolen car was torched.

Merseyside Police has appealed for information following a vehicle fire on the Upton bypass earlier this week. The main road was closed by Merseyside Police in both directions on Monday, October 31 because the burnt out car blocked the carriageway.

The road, closed on the bridge over the M53 and by Upton train station, was closed in the early hours according to traffic monitor INRIX. Traffic was diverted away from the bridge down Noctorum Avenue and Manor Drive with a lot of vehicles turning around all together. The delays affected traffic on the Wirral as far as Arrowe Park.

A police scientific support team could be seen working on the car on Monday morning. A forensic officer was taking photos of the burnt out car before putting a tarpaulin over the top. The car was in a bad state of damage with a puddle of burnt plastic on the road at the back of the car.

The road was eventually reopened shortly before 2pm after the vehicle was recovered. A Merseyside Police spokesperson told the ECHO officers were called by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service at around 2.30am following reports of a car fire.

The spokesperson added: "It is believed the car had been previously stolen and the cause of the fire is being treated as suspected deliberate ignition. Enquiries remain ongoing."

Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 quoting log 0063 of 31st October.
