Upset Nottingham drivers 'blown to pieces' by costs head to Asda after price drop

Drivers at a Nottingham petrol station which recently slashed its prices have slammed the "ridiculous" effects of the cost of living crisis - with one man saying it has "blown him to pieces." On Friday, July 29, Asda announced it had cut its petrol prices, with it now 12p a litre cheaper than the national average.

Bosses have cut the price of petrol by 5p a litre and diesel by 3p. The cuts have been announced to help drivers save money amid the cost of living crisis. Local branches include Hyson Green and West Bridgford.

It means drivers filling up at the Asda forecourts will pay 174p on average for unleaded and 185p for diesel. In comparison to the national picture, Government figures have shown the average petrol price to be 186.67p this week. With the average for diesel 195.91p Yet, despite drivers welcoming the drop, some at Hyson Green in Nottingham on Saturday, July 30, called out the 'disgraceful' money that people are still having to churn out for fuel. Adam Stoker, 35, said: "It's the reason I came here but, well, I'm not optimistic about it. The prices will be straight back up again soon - it won't last long..

"They take liberties with the prices. It's been ridiculous for years but it was at least manageable but now it's a disgrace really and something has to be done about it.

Joseph Mifflin, 53, who lives in Old Basford, said: "This has got to be the first time I've heard the prices have actually gone down in ages. I don't think that this will be kept up for long though going off of what I've been told.

"That's why I was so surprised. But the reality is we're still struggling from Covid and we're still paying the price ultimately.

"I pay upwards of £70 usually on fuel and I usually fill up two or three times a week it's crazy. And what's more, it isn't just fuel where prices are skyrocketing.

"It's electric too and so many other day-to-day things it's just becoming unmanageable for everyone. The cost of living has gone up so much so many people can barely afford to get by each week.

"It's blown me to pieces it has."

The latest price reduction follows a cut of 4ppl earlier in the week, meaning the supermarket has reduced fuel prices by 9ppl on unleaded and 7ppl on diesel since the start of the week. It applies to Asda's 323 petrol stations across the UK

Another driver, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: "Well I'm glad at least that the prices have dropped. It can't keep going on like it has, it just can't.

"Let's hope it stays that way!"
