Parliament Street in Nottingham remains closed after woman injured in collision

Shoppers have expressed their concern after a woman was injured in a collision with a bus in one of the 'busiest areas of Nottingham'. Emergency services were called to a collision between a bus and a pedestrian shortly after 2pm on Wednesday, November 23 on Upper Parliament Street outside of the Victoria Centre.

Officers closed part of Parliament Street, with the closure remaining in place this evening. Delays are being reported in the area.

Police said one woman was injured but that her condition is currently unknown. Part of Lower Parliament Street between Glasshouse street and Milton Street was closed and a number of bus diversions were put in place.

Those around the Victoria Centre after the collision expressed their concern. Colin Dejacolyn, 69, a retiree from Radford, said: "I'm shocked to see all the commotion when going out for shop, but I am not surprised it has happened here.

"This junction is so busy with shoppers going to and from the Victoria Centre and with buses too. It must be the busiest area of Nottingham city centre, so it is going to cause a lot of problems too having this closed."

George Kay, 74, from Nottingham, said: "I'm not surprised an accident has happened here because you have a lot of people crossing at once and a lot of buses coming through. It's going to cause chaos in the city centre.

"I had only just arrived into the city centre when it happened. It is all a bit of a shock to be honest."

The accident seriously has disrupted transport in Nottingham city centre. Bus passengers were provided with diversion information by NCT staff and police officers at the scene.

A Nottingham resident, who did not want to be named, said: "This junction having an accident is not really that unexpected. I hope the woman is alright, god bless her.

"It is going to cause traffic chaos if it stays closed for too much longer. It's probably the worst place for a closure to be."

Police have appealed for witnesses and told people to avoid the area while the junction was closed. Inspector Rich Markham, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Officers are currently in attendance at a road traffic accident outside the Victoria Centre, in Nottingham city centre.

“We were called shortly after 2pm today (November 23), to reports of a collision between a bus and a pedestrian.

“One woman is reported to be injured but her condition is currently unknown.

“Road closures are currently in place on Upper Parliament Street between Glasshouse street and Milton Street so we are asking drivers and members of the public to please avoid the area.” Anyone with any information or who witnessed the incident is asked to call 101, quoting incident number 372 of November 23, 2022.
