Upmarket Edinburgh restaurant withdraw application for 'striking' roof canopy

An upmarket Edinburgh restaurant have withdrawn their bid to have a ‘striking’ roof canopy.

McLarens on the Corner from the Morningside area have had the temporary structure outside their restaurant for the past two years to cope with the coronavirus pandemic.

Like many establishments in Edinburgh and across the UK, McLarens had to adapt to continue trading during the pandemic and had been seating customers outside, when regulations stipulated that strict social distancing must be adhered to in restaurants.

However, some locals were unhappy at the large canopy and complained that is was something of an eyesore.

The planning application from the owners Signature Pubs Limited wanted a licence to install the temporary canopy until March 31, 2022, but that has now been withdrawn.

The canopy was only ever intended to be a temporary measure but it upset some locals.

McLarens admitted on their original planning application last year that the canopy was ‘striking.’

They said: “In terms of impact on the appearance of the conservation area there is no doubt that visual appearance of the temporary tensile fabric canopy is striking.

“However, it is not incongruous bearing some similarities to the shop awnings which are a common feature of Morningside Road and with its peaks similar in form to the spires of the nearby churches which give Holy Corner its name.”

A decision notice by the City of Edinburgh Council, dated February 21, confirmed that McLaren’s have withdrawn their application.
