Upenn Officials Call For Demonstrators To Leave On-Campus Encampment

Liz MaGill University of Pennsylvania President

University of Pennsylvania officials have issued a statement calling for demonstrators to vacate an on-campus encampment due to what they described as 'blatant violations of University policies.' The statement, signed by Interim President J. Larry Jameson, Provost John L. Jackson, and Senior Executive Vice President Craig R. Carnaroli, emphasized the university's commitment to supporting peaceful protests while also ensuring the safety and security of the campus community.

The officials expressed concern over reported incidents of harassment, intimidation, and vandalism, including the defacement of a statue in front of College Hall with antisemitic graffiti, which they stated would be investigated as a hate crime. They highlighted that such actions violate both University policies and state and federal laws, including Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.

UPenn officials have informed the demonstrators of their alleged legal and policy violations and warned of potential sanctions if the encampment is not disbanded promptly. In response, the Penn Arab Student Society (PASS) called for a thorough investigation into the graffiti incident, urging the University to consider the accounts of witnesses present during the alleged violations.

The Muslim Students’ Association at UPenn echoed the sentiment of ensuring fairness and equality in the University's actions moving forward. They emphasized the importance of conducting a proper and fair investigation before making any conclusive allegations.

As the situation unfolds, the University of Pennsylvania continues to navigate the delicate balance between upholding the rights of peaceful protest and maintaining a safe and inclusive campus environment for all members of the community.
