As of July 25, 2023, 40 statewide measures have been certified for the ballot in eight states, 15 more measures more than the average number certified at this point in other even-numbered years from 2010 to 2020.
For 2024, 45 statewide measures have been certified in 21 states. That’s equal to the average number certified at this point from 2010 to 2022.
Here’s an update on the latest ballot measure activity:
- Six new measure was certified for the ballot last week in 2023:
- Maine Allow Individuals Under Guardianship for Reasons of Mental Illness to Vote in Elections Amendment
- Maine Change Time Period of Judicial Review of Initiative Petitions Amendment
- Maine Prohibit Foreign Spending in Elections Initiative
- Maine Require All Provisions of Constitution Be Included in Official Printing Amendment
- Maine Remove Residency Requirement for Initiative Petition Circulators
- Ohio Right to Make Reproductive Decisions Including Abortion Initiative
- Signatures are being collected for one initiative during a 10-day cure period for 2023:
- Ohio Marijuana Legalization Initiative
Campaigns for two initiatives submitted signatures, which are pending verification for Nov. 2024.
- California Prohibit State Limitations on Local Rent Control Initiative (2024)
- Michigan $15 Minimum Wage Initiative (2024)
From 2010 to 2022, the average number of statewide ballot measures certified in an even-numbered year was 164. By this time during even-numbered years from 2010 through 2022, an average of 45 statewide measures had been certified for the ballot.
