Update on revamp of Capital One's Nottingham HQ as new café planned

The revamp of a major business' city centre headquarters has been updated to include a proposal for a new café. Rooftop extension plans for Capital One's headquarters in Station Street, which would create new events and greenery areas, were approved by Nottingham City Council on December 22.

But a fresh proposal has now been submitted for an internal café and servery space to operate between approved stair cores, and to provide a permanent canopy instead of the tensile structures that were previously approved. The old application focused on converting the roof areas at the firm's Trent House building into a events terrace.

As well as the now planned café, the previous plans will provide a place for the company's 1,400 Trent House-based employees to enjoy new open air hospitality and events on existing rooftop areas. Developers also say that a "green wall" and new planting will enhance local biodiversity, and "illustrate the importance of investment in a landscape within the confines of the city".

The view from the rooftop has been described by planners as "superb", offering panoramic views. Internally, the project features the re-purposing of an existing second floor area into a small conference venue with a social space served by the new café.

A planning document, included in a planning application submitted to make the initial changes, said "the project will transform two existing unused roof areas into verdant and inspiring external spaces". Activity in different weather conditions is encouraged with large bespoke canopy structures.

The new planning application, filed for the café on March 7, said: "The client has requested a change to the approved design, to integrate an internal café and servery space between the two approved stair cores, and to provide a permanent canopy in lieu of the tensile canopy structures previously submitted." The application is currently pending consideration by Nottingham City Council.
