Update on 49ers injured reserve list after Week 6

The 49ers through six weeks have avoided any major injuries, leaving their injured reserve list much less active than it’s been in recent years.

Cornerback Samuel Womack is the only player who’s gone on IR since the season began., and with six weeks down San Francisco has a couple players eligible to come off of injured lists who still haven’t been activated.

Here’s a quick rundown of what the 49ers’ injured reserve and physically unable to perform lists look like heading into Week 7:

DE Robert Beal (hamstring)

Beal, a 2023 fifth-round pick, struggled with a hamstring injury in his first training camp. The ailment landed him on IR after he made the initial 53-man roster. Beal is eligible to return whenever the team wants since he’s cleared the four-week threshold. However, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the 49ers have Beal on track to redshirt his first season.

WR Danny Gray (shoulder)

Gray injured the AC joint in his shoulder late in the preseason. The 49ers placed him on IR after he made the initial roster. He’s also eligible to return. It seems like San Francisco is happy with its wide receiver depth though so there may not be a roster spot for Gray which could prolong his stay on IR. If WR Deebo Samuel winds up missing significant time with a shoulder injury he suffered in Week 6, the 49ers may turn to Gray once he’s cleared by doctors to return.

CB Samuel Womack III (knee)

Womack is eligible to return after injuring his knee in the first Week 2 practice. That doesn’t mean he’s necessarily close to coming back though. His injury was an MCL sprain that was expected to keep him out for six-to-eight weeks. A six-week return would still keep him out through Week 8, and the team has a bye in Week 9 so it would appear the earliest we might see Womack is Week 10 in Jacksonville. There’s nothing definitive on an update timeline for him though.

TE Cameron Latu (knee)

Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports

Latu had meniscus surgery after getting hurt in the preseason. His season is over since he went on IR before final cuts. The 2023 third-round pick will have to wait until next season to make his NFL debut.

CB Darrell Luter Jr. (knee)

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Luter is on the PUP list after hurting his knee in the final practice of the offseason program. He is eligible to return, but head coach Kyle Shanahan was largely mum on whether Luter would be returning any time soon when asked about it after Week 6.
