A man was pulled to safety after falling into the water near to the Runcorn Bridge.
The incident sparked a major emergency service response at around 22.45pm on Friday as five fire engines from Runcorn, Widnes, Penketh, Warrington and Lymm, and a rescue boat were sent to the scene. It came following reports of a man in the water of the Manchester Ship Canal, near to the Silver Jubilee Bridge in Runcorn.
Waterloo Road was among the roads sealed off by police as multiple ambulances were also sent to the scene. A police helicopter was also seen circling over the Runcorn Bridge as crews entered the water to rescue the man.

A rescue sled and specialist rope rescue equipment was used to help bring the man ashore and into the care of paramedics. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said the man was passed over into the care of the North West Ambulance Service.
In an update today, May 21, Merseyside Water Rescue tweeted: "During last night's shift a distressed male threatened to jump into the water. The crew were en route, he entered the water but was swiftly rescued by the team.
"First aid was administered whilst awaiting @NWAmbulanc, working with @spark_medical, the casualty handed over to NWAS."
In a statement on Friday, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 22:43 on Friday 20 May, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to assist emergency service partner agencies in the rescue of an individual in the water in the Manchester Ship Canal, near to the Silver Jubilee Bridge in Runcorn.
"Five fire engines were in attendance at the scene; from Runcorn, Widnes, Penketh, Warrington and Lymm, as well as a rescue boat and rope rescue unit.
"Crews used a rescue sled and specialist rope rescue equipment to help bring the person ashore and into the care of paramedics."
