Upcoming Leeds United opponent set for double deadline day boost and Whites reunion

Everton are set to receive a double boost ahead of next weekend’s clash with Leeds United.

Frank Lampard is on the verge of being appointed as the club’s new manager, while Donny van de Beek is set to arrive on loan for the rest of the season from Manchester United.

The Toffees have been on the lookout for a new permanent manager following the sacking of Rafael Benitez last month, who won just one of his last 13 matches in charge at Goodison Park.

Everton have been in desperate need of some fresh ideas in the dugout as their struggles continued even after Benitez’s departure, with caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson overseeing their 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa last time out.

Lampard arrives on Merseyside just over 12 months on from his sacking at Chelsea, whom he left with the club sat ninth in the Premier League.

He has also had a spell in charge at Derby County, where he took them to within 90 minutes of promotion with a 2-1 play-off final defeat to Villa.

Their clash with Leeds is set to be Lampard’s first home league game at the club and will reignite his managerial rivalry with Marcelo Bielsa, which sparked into life during his time at the Rams due to the infamous ‘spygate’ controversy.

And Lampard has wasted no time in trying to implement his authority on proceedings at Everton, with van de Beek’s arrival set to be confirmed imminently.

The former Ajax midfielder had been locked in talks with Crystal Palace but has chosen a move to the Toffees instead.

Van de Beek has struggled at Manchester United but if he can get anywhere near the level of his days at Ajax, he will represent a considerable coup for Everton as they look to steer clear of relegation trouble.
