Upcoming iOS 17.4 release may be delayed due to missing feature

12 iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 Features That Make Your Life Easier

As Apple enthusiasts eagerly await the next iPhone update, iOS 17.4, the company has given us some clues about its impending release. The update is particularly notable, as it includes several changes that align with the European Union's Digital Markets Act, set to come into effect on March 6, 2024.

According to the Act, Apple is classified as one of the designated gatekeepers, a digital platform that holds significant power in the digital economy. These gatekeepers have been given a deadline of six months, until March 6, 2024, to comply with the Act's requirements, including opening up iOS to external app stores.

Based on this information, we can narrow down the release window for iOS 17.4. Apple typically releases updates on Tuesdays, occasionally on Mondays. Since March 6 falls on a Wednesday in 2024, we can expect Apple to release the general version of iOS 17.4 sometime between Friday, March 1 and Wednesday, March 6.

Considering the recent release of the third developer beta on February 13 and the expected public beta on February 14, it seems that Apple is on track with its release plans. The update holds significant changes, especially for European residents, including expanded App Store choices, search engine options, and more.

Aside from these regulatory changes, iOS 17.4 will also introduce some exciting features globally. Users can look forward to improvements in Stolen Device Protection, new emoji additions like a phoenix and expressive smileys, and even a refreshing lime emoji. Apple Cash will see enhancements allowing the creation of a virtual debit card when Apple Pay isn't available.

Furthermore, the update will bring new ways to control music on HomePod or Apple TV, an updated design for Apple Music's Listen Now tab renamed as Home, and the introduction of SharePlay Music control for HomePod. With SharePlay, friends and family can collaborate and share control of the music playing on HomePod and Apple TV, provided the user grants permission.

While there are many exciting features to anticipate, it's unclear exactly when iOS 17.4 will be released. Based on past patterns, it's unlikely to be on March 1, a Friday, as Apple typically reserves this day for urgent updates. Additionally, the weekend is also an unlikely timeframe. Considering that Apple typically releases updates at 7 p.m. Central European Time and acknowledges the European release ahead of the United States, it seems safe to assume that either Monday, March 4, or Tuesday, March 5 will be the chosen release date.

However, it's important to note that recent reports indicate a missing feature in the beta versions of iOS 17.4. SharePlay for HomePod and Apple TV, which previously appeared in the initial beta release, has not returned in subsequent iterations. This suggests that the feature may not be ready for the general release in early March.

If SharePlay is not included in iOS 17.4, it may be postponed to a later update, such as iOS 17.5. While this development could put the release date in jeopardy, it's more likely that Apple will strip out certain features to ensure a timely release in line with the EU's deadline.

Overall, iOS 17.4 holds promise for Apple users worldwide, with significant regulatory compliance features for EU residents and exciting additions such as new emoji, improved Apple Cash capabilities, and enhanced music control options. As the release date approaches, Apple enthusiasts can eagerly anticipate the arrival of iOS 17.4 and its array of new features.
