Unwanted dog spends 300 days in kennels after being returned for second time

A misunderstood dog has spent 300 days in kennels after being returned to the RSPCA for the second time.

Three-year-old Waffle was rehomed by the RSPCA’s Stubbington Ark in Hampshire in 2021 but was sadly returned after four months as the owners could no longer cope with his behaviour.

The border collie was sadly put in a situation which caused him to bite.

He’s now been waiting for more than nine months but staff refuse to give up on him and believe the right home is out there somewhere.

Kayleigh Allen said: “Unfortunately Waffle really struggles to bond with new people and is particularly nervous around strange men.

"However, once he knows you he is such a lovely lad, but it can take several meetings to get to this stage.

“Waffle is a complex soul and he’s very sensitive as he’s not had the best start in life. He lacks socialisation skills and is fearful of new people and other dogs.

"He initially found the outside world incredibly overwhelming but, with lots of time, patience and work, he’s come a long way.

“However, his new owners will need to be confident and willing to continue with his training, although we’re happy to support this work in the home.”

Waffle would ideally suit a working style rural home which is quiet and has limited visitors.

Kayleigh added: “Waffle is great fun to be around, loves his toys and is great to train.

“He’s incredibly intelligent and loves to learn new things. He thrives when he’s working one-on-one with his handler and we know he’ll make a fantastic companion for the right person.”

The RSPCA is urging people to adopt an animal in need rather than turning to breeders when wanting to welcome a pet into their family.

"While it may be easy to find animals on the internet or even spend hundreds on an expensive breeder, you could risk heartache or huge vet's bills if you don't do your homework," a statement reads.

"By adopting and not shopping you'll also feel good for doing good - by giving an animal a second chance at life in a loving home!

"Plus, adopting from us means that you can relax knowing that all our animals are healthy, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

"As with all the animals we rehome, we'll pass on the details of their behaviour and veterinary treatment. You'll likely know more about your rescue animal's history than if you were to buy an animal online!

"We've taken the time to get to know each animal as an individual, to understand their likes and dislikes and to prepare them for life in a loving family, which means there are less likely to be nasty surprises when you get home!

"When you adopt a cat or a dog from one of our centres, you'll also get four weeks free pet insurance, which is vital to protect your pet's future as well as your bank balance! There's so much to gain from rescuing an animal in need."
